Gastric band for weight loss does it work and how does it work?

Question by Gossip81: Gastric band for weight loss does it work and how does it work?

Positive feedback please

Answer by bumbleboi
It does work, it is like an elastic band which is placed around the stomach to restrict it’s capacity and function, hence you cannot eat as much as you once did. It is major surgery and highly risky and only available to those who are morbidly obese, which is different to clinically obese.
To be obese or clinically obese you have to be in excess of your ideal weight and body mass index (BMI). To be morbidly obese you have to be twice or more than twice your ideal weight and BMI, as the words imply, morbidly obese people are in danger of early or imminent death.

Dental Bridge, whats involved? and would it work for me??……?

Question by Jj J: Dental Bridge, whats involved? and would it work for me??……?
I have a phobia of the dentist, so going there is very traumatic for me. Ive always got sedated in the past.

I have a canine tooth which has no teeth either side of it, i have a partial denture that the NHS made up 5 years ago which is poor in colour, poor in quality and poor fitment.

Im thinking to go private and ask them to try give me some sort of dental bridge, Before i start sheading alot of money… Does anyone know if they would or what type of bridge and whats involved that they would use? as i said my canine tooth will be the support and i want the fill the gap either side. The canine appears to be healthy. Answers greatly appriciated

Answer by hornchurchmale
this is really a question you need to ask the dentist as only professional appraisal and answer will be any real use. as I understating it, a bridge needs to be from supporting tooth or teeth and using just one to offer support to another two will probably put too much strain on the canine with eventual failure. a bridge After all means ‘from one side to another’ eg two supports at least over a crossing. ( gap)
The fear is very understandable and I used to suffer that too . ( still hate dentists ) any decent dentist will be able to inform you what exactly is involved. the possible outcome and any risks involved. it isn’t cheap but I had one for many years until the supporting tooth /gum erosion reached a point where i had to lose both tooth and bridge.

What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?

Question by Dawn: What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?
I’ve had a drill broken off in a tooth while undergoing a root canal. The dentist left it in there and sealed it up. The tooth later abscessed during my vacation.

Another dentist ordered a crown which was defective. He put it on my tooth anyway and charged me full price for it. It never stayed on and the tooth eventually had to be pulled because I couldn’t afford ANOTHER crown.

I also received a defective bottom denture which the dentist refused to correct… because he was giving me “such a good deal”. The denture eventually warped my lower jaw.

Do you have any horror stories? Or am I the only one?

Sometimes I wonder if dentists have any integrity.
Oh, I’ve changed dentists often but they all seem to make mistakes… at least the ones I’ve seen.

They took out the wrong teeth. I was getting braces and needed to have 4 permanent teeth taken out. They took 4 other teeth. After realizing their mistake, they took the 4 teeth they were supposed to take out.

I’m now missing 8 permanent teeth, and I brush daily. Damn dentists…

Should i have the work done and how much would it cost?

Question by nurburg: Should i have the work done and how much would it cost?
I am 24. I have had 8 fillings in my life, i went to the dentist last week and i need another 7 fillings and i am going to lose one of my front teeth and need root canal on it. The fillings that i did have previous, some are loose and have holes in again. I am in pain all the time and haven’t been able to chew on one side for years. I have very good oral hygene the dentist said but i used to drink alot of fruit juice which im told has contributed to the problem. My teeth have been like this all my life. I also have unusually large nerves in my teeth too which is why they often hurt. They are making me so unhappy. I feel it is useless to try and keep repairing them all the time and it doesn’t help that i have a very big phobia of the dentist.

I am wondering if there is something available which will do the following: I want all my teeth taken out including the nerves in my gums. I want some sort of permanent false teeth put in. a bit like dentures but they are screwed in somehow and never can be removed. I have thought seriously about this. How much would it cost to have this done.? the money is irrelevant really i will pay whatever it takes. is this available?
Thanks

There is nothing like your own teeth. I would have the cavities filled, the root canal done and do whatever you can to maintain your own teeth. You are only 24 and have many years to go if you get dentures now. Dentures are usually done as a last resort. And any good dentist will tell you that.
I also had a severe phobia of the dentist, I hadn’t gone in 20 years! I have found a painless dentist who knows he’s dealing with a coward, and who has a wonderful staff. Now, it’s not my favorite place to be, but I truly don’t mind going any more. After the first heavy duty cleaning – they had to do it in four parts – I now go every 4 months – I don’t wait for the 6 months as recommended. I figure every 4 months, means less cleaning each time I’m in the chair.
Try to find a dentist you’re happy with, there is no reason for you to be in any pain.

Has the Queen had work on her teeth do you think?

Question by psych_78: Has the Queen had work on her teeth do you think?
Saw the Queen smiling and noticed that as an 80 year old she has pretty damn good teeth. Is it likely that she has:
(i) Dentures
(ii) Crowns and/or Veneers
(iii) All her own

I’m thinking they are all her own as they do look natural.

Found a good pic, what do you think?

dental work done now and pay on a monthly basis?

Question by richard: dental work done now and pay on a monthly basis?
cosmetic dental surgery

Answer by caroline1409f1
How about looking at joining HSA – you can get dental cover. I think it’s like a subscription insurance policy kind of thing – you pay monthly and get a certain amount of money back. It might be something you want to look into. Otherwise, ask your own dentist if they would do the work and let you pay in instalments.

Work experience for medicine?

Question by blaaaaaaaa: Work experience for medicine?
well… I’m in college but currently have NO work exp and want to apply for medicine for 2011 entry (so applying this oct) for medicine. i am trying to get a lot of work experience under my belt

my mum works at the local hosp and i wrote a letter 2 a consultant she knows asking for work experience and he has given it to me – but he works in the maternity & womens healthcare department. im glad ive got it but i feel like the department is too specific. is it??

hes given it to me from the thurs 5th – weds 11th august. i want to do 1/2 days at somwhere like pathology so do you think i should write to a doctor there for something like the 3rd – 4th august so i have it in the same week? will i be able to do this or will it make the procedure too complicated? or can i only have the one placement?

and also does anybody have any idea of what i will be doing there on my work exp as he is a “consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist”… will he show me things like x-rays or anything?

sorry 4 all the questions and thnx :)

It will depend on what he chooses to show you. You might also ask your local GP if you can accompany him.
