What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?

Question by Dawn: What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?
I’ve had a drill broken off in a tooth while undergoing a root canal. The dentist left it in there and sealed it up. The tooth later abscessed during my vacation.

Another dentist ordered a crown which was defective. He put it on my tooth anyway and charged me full price for it. It never stayed on and the tooth eventually had to be pulled because I couldn’t afford ANOTHER crown.

I also received a defective bottom denture which the dentist refused to correct… because he was giving me “such a good deal”. The denture eventually warped my lower jaw.

Do you have any horror stories? Or am I the only one?

Sometimes I wonder if dentists have any integrity.
Oh, I’ve changed dentists often but they all seem to make mistakes… at least the ones I’ve seen.

They took out the wrong teeth. I was getting braces and needed to have 4 permanent teeth taken out. They took 4 other teeth. After realizing their mistake, they took the 4 teeth they were supposed to take out.

I’m now missing 8 permanent teeth, and I brush daily. Damn dentists…

Some teeth advice please.?

Question by Clare: Some teeth advice please.?
Im 20. I’ve never really had good teeth, when I was young my mum nagged and nagged me to look after my teeth, which had the opposite effect!

About 6 months ago one of my top front teeth was badly decayed and split in half, I was supposed to have a root canal and have it crowned but when my dentist tried to root canal it he said the decay had gone too far up the root or something so I ended up having it pulled out and getting a partial denture instead.

I constantly get pain with my teeth. I think every single one of my teeth has a filling in it, more than 1 in some of them. They’re very sensitive and I can barely eat anything without pain. I get really bad toothache every few months, its just come on again today, no amount of pain killers helps. It keeps me awake all night. I think its an abscess, I get them a lot.

What im thinking of doing is going to the dentist and saying pull them all out, or at least just the top ones.

A few days ago the side broke off of one of my top canine teeth. Also the 2 smaller top ones at the side of the very front ones need to have root canals and possibly be crowned.

I know people say to keep your natural teeth as long as possible, but when they’re in such bad condition, need a lot of work, and are causing so much pain surely getting a denture would benefit me. Advice please…

That’s really unfortunate, especially as you’re so young. I would really advise you to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible, and immediately seek help from a dentist. Your best option might be to get porcelain veneers but they can be extremely expensive..but I suppose it’s the price you pay for not looking after your teeth :(
Your only other option would be dentures, but it will affect your confidance for the rest of your life, as well as your relationships etc. Consider saving up for veneers x

Question for an ophtalmologist: my friend is turing blind, below are some details of the tests… pl advice?

Question by mohindersobti: Question for an ophtalmologist: my friend is turing blind, below are some details of the tests… pl advice?
Female patient
DOB: June 7, 1973
Poland
In the hospital they diagnosed the problem as a retrobulbar inflammation of left optic nerve

Some tests done are detailed below:

MRI of the head – the result: everything is ok, MRI shows no changes (we have everything on CD)
Ultrasonic blood flow detection in carotid arteries – generally OK but because they wasn’t 100% sure, they ordered angio-TK (angio-CT)
angio-TK (angio-CT) – the results: no pathology, everything is OK there ( we have it on CD)
angio-MRI of the head – again, everything is OK, no pathology (we have CD)
Rtg of nasal sinusem – OK
stomatological consultation – 2 dentists said – everything is ok, but even so docs in the hospital sent her to another dentist and she ordered to remove 4 teeth (two of them because they could press the nerve, two of them because they were devitalized, dead)
blood tests:
InG and IgM – negative, no borreliosis
CRP 2,0 0,6 (whatever it is)
Hematocrit 30,8
Hemoglobin 11,00
Erythrocyte 3,82
Leukocyte 13,6
WR (Wassermann Reaction) – negative
Na (sodium) 139,6
K (potassium) 4,96
RF (rheumatoid factor) 7 (0-14)
ASO (Antistreptolysin O) 24 (0-200)
FT3 1,8 ( 2,02 -4,43)
FT4 1,55 (0,93-1,71)
TSH 0,364 (0,27-4,2)
Anty DNA negative
They were giving her: Cavinton (Vinpocetine), Dexaven (Dexamethasonum), Solu Medrol (Methylprednisolone Acetate), Lendacin (Ceftriaxone), Polfilin (Pentoxyfiline), Metypred (Methylprednisolone Acetate)
Leaving hospital the patient was ordered to take Metypred (Methylprednisolone Acetate), Cavinton (Vinpocetine) and Controloc (Pantoprazole)
Looking for focus of inflammation patient visited: laryngologist and gynaecologist – everything is OK, we have made USG of abdominal cavity – everything’s OK
Finally, patient has visited endocrinologist. Because she suspected the empty sella syndrome (ESS) – she ordered MRI of pituitary gland – the results, everything is OK ( we have CD) patient had blood test again – TSH 2,19 (0,27-4,2), FT3 5,33 (3,1-6,8), anty-TPO 9,8 (<34,0)
Patient also had some kind of test which shows electric impuls in brain when your eye is looking at the moving white and black chequered pattern on the monitor screen (We think it is called F-VEP, we have scan of the results (in English))

That’s all. Generally nobody knows why my friend has that problem with her eye and why she can’t see much with it or if she will ever be able to see more? Please advice with your expertise, what tests can be done, to detect this problem & how or if we can try improving her conditions!

Damage along the optic pathway causes a variety of visual field changes. Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve. Symptoms are usually unilateral, with eye pain and partial or complete vision loss. Diagnosis is primarily clinical. Treatment is directed at the underlying condition; most cases resolve spontaneously.
Outlook (Prognosis):-
Patients who have optic neuritis without a disease such as multiple sclerosis have a good chance of recovery. Optic neuritis caused by multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus has a poorer outlook.
Possible Complications:-
* Body-wide side effects from corticosteroids
* Vision loss
About 20% of patients with a first episode of optic neuritis will develop multiple sclerosis.

Question by : As a new denture wearer I would appreciate some advice, thanks?
I only have to wear top dentures and as I have 4 teeth at the top the denture was supposed to be small.I paid around £400.There is still a very thin metal plate that fits on to part of the roof of my mouth.I was told I had to get used to it,but it stops me talking depending on which word is spoken. Will this ever improve? Then have fitted 2 awful metal “hooks” that if I am not carefull rip the side of my mouth. They are supposed to clip on to teeth, but I use the glue stuff. How can I get this off the roof of my mouth when I take tham out

Best answer:

Answer by Chocco B
i have a metal clip on mine and dont use a dental glue.

just brush roof of mouth when you brush teeth, comes off easily.

The clip wont shred ur mouth, and you speak will improve in a couple of weeks.

I really have no idea but I hope you get it sorted. I know how women can get when they can’t get their hair straight so I can imagine how upset she is over her teeth, just call the dentist first thing in the morning, they must be able to help in some way. Good luck!

Do you think you could give me a hand with some health and social coursework that i am REALLY struggling with?

Question by Vera: Do you think you could give me a hand with some health and social coursework that i am REALLY struggling with?
I am so stuck!!!!!!!

I am just wading my way through my health and social care coursework and am struggling to say the least! So if you could help me, i really would be immensely grateful!!!!!

I need to write about how to maintain environments for clinical procedures, so basically in other words, i need to discuss how medical practitioners maintain an environment that is an excellent standard. The medical practitioners which i am required to discuss are a District Nurse, a Counsellor and a Physiotherapist, and the bit that i am finding exceedingly difficult is that i have been told to write about ‘Observation’ (e.g. this means what systems are there in place to make sure what is required is actually going on??? But i just don’t know!!!!) and ‘Legal and organisational requirements’. I need to discuss the importance of observation and legal and organisational requirements in relation to these three practitioners in order to enable them to maintain an environment suitable for clinical procedures.

Can you help me??? I do so hope you can!! And forgive me for this question being so long-winded.

Need some advice about a partial denture pls?

Question by xxAlyxx: Need some advice about a partial denture pls?
Hi, i had a partial denture fitted yesterday which does feel extremely uncomfortable, which i know is something to be expected but it is also hurting the roof of my mouth and also occasionally making me gag say once every 1-2 hours. I have also had a headache for the majority of the time it has been hurting my mouth which im not sure whether it is connected or not. is any of this normal or do a need to go back to the dentist? thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Terry G
The discomfort will gradually get better…as to the gaging problem, again, that too will just take getting used to something being that far back on the roof of your mouth. If the discomfort continues for a week or so, and doesn’t get better, you may need to go back to the dentist for some “fine tuning”!

My doctor is sending me for some Gynecologist treatment..?

Question by purplepunch: My doctor is sending me for some Gynecologist treatment..?
It is for the Gyne to take a snippet of a sample from my womb to check to see if there is anything wrong and to rule out “things”..

I have been having ALOT of probs for over a year and ahalf with my periods.

My period generally lasts for around 2 weeks followed by 1 week of nothing to having mini bleeds inbetween along with lots of discharge that is near enough always stained with blood.

I have had a pap/smear test and came back normal, I had a scan at the beginning of lastyear and that shown up some folicles on one ovary and thickening of the womb, but still the doc said it was normal.

my question is what is this prodedure im being sent for? will it hurt? will i be under any form of anethesetic? Has anyone had this type of surgery?
