Is the tooth nerve removed during a dental implant?

Question by LoveSydney: Is the tooth nerve removed during a dental implant?
I had a metal pin put in back in 2002 and a crown added. Recently I went to get a new crown but it wasnt as good and I complained that it seemed to stick out. {not flush with the other teeth} The dentist said he could shave the pin but this could be problematic. Anyway he did so and we got the new crown sorted. Its been a couple of months now but I still feel a kind of ache there. Its not painful its more like a hot feeling ache.
What could this be? I thought there was no nerve for implants. I have noticed I have got quite dark gums i dont know if that is a sympton.
Why would I have this sensation around my dental implant? Its getting hard for me to forget my crown.
The bite is fine.
Would the pin be stuck in an existing tooth with a nerve or is this not done because I think his concern when grinding was touching a nerve. If so would it be more than just this hot sensation aching i would feel if it was a nerve problem. Would I be in pain,

the idea of an implant is to replace missing teeth, so yes the nerve is removed as it is in the root of the tooth. The new crown may be too high in your bite so your dentist should check this with something called articulating paper, this is a very thin piece of carbon paper which is placed between your teeth and then you are asked to bite gently down on it, it will mark any high spots on the crown. As to the ache this can be a result of you biting too heavily on the crown so the best thing you can do is go back to your dentist to get it checked out.

How do I go about getting 1 dental implant done on the NHS?

Question by Clare: How do I go about getting 1 dental implant done on the NHS?
I was told by my private dentist that I may be able to get 1 dental implant done on the NHS. Im 20 years old and have lost a front tooth. I wear a partial denture which keeps breaking, when i say keeps breaking I mean all the time.

I don’t wear it at home or when I eat, only when I go out. It was repaired last tuesday, I picked it up from the dentist, wore it wednesday and 2 hours at college, wore it for about 5 hours thursday, didn’t touch it at all friday, wore it 2 hour saturday, went to take it out to eat something and it snapped again.

Its really starting to affect my life, I wont go to college without it, I wont meet up with friends, ive cancelled plans this week purely because I have no tooth. I know it seems stupid but im very very self conscious. I was always bullied at school and now have no confidence at all (yeah there’s the sob story lol)

Does this seem a reasonable case just to get 1 implant done? If I do it through my dentist it will cost £2000, just for the one!

I don’t know where to start about contacting the NHS.

i wonder if there would be any information on the NHS Direct website…there certainly is a phone number where you could possibly ring for advice. http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

i got my dental implant done in India…it cost me £470 & is perfect…like you say – UK dentists charge £2000 – i doubt you can get one on the NHS – but it is sure worth a try. good luck.

Pretty sure your fitted with temporary crowns or bridges until the final procedure.

That’s what happened with me when I got my crown. I had a temporary one slapped in until the fitted one was made.

implant or bridge?

Question by uk_steveo: implant or bridge?
hi all, well heres my story about 4 years ago i smashed both my front teeth, since then ive had 1 really bad dentist who wouldn’t do anything for me for 4 years, ive just found this other dentist (who i am really pleased with) he as recommended a veneer for 1 tooth and an implant for the other tooth.

i got quoted at £2,100 for this work and agreed to it.

anyway ive had my front tooth extracted and given a temporary denture…i went to have the implant put in last week, but my dentist apologised to me and said there isn’t enough bone for the implant and recommended that i need a bone graft and it is going to be 6 months before i can have the implant fitted – (total after this treatment is around £3000)… which is ALL my savings, basically i’m just wanting some advice at to what you would do.

i’m 25 and basically wanting all MY OWN teeth back again to last me for the rest of my life, so I said if that took all the money in my bank then so be it, but ive been reading (cont)
about bridges and just wondering if i should get this instead of an implant and veneer?

Ive just been reading about implants and some sound like real horror storys if they fail, but yeah

.what is the lifespan on bridges?
.recommended?
.would you just stick with an implant and veneer if you was me?

thanks for the help

As a person who is going through exactly what you are I would say go for the bridge. I was told I needed not only bone but tissue grafts as well. These are horribly painful procedures and cost thousands of dollars each procedure. A bridge will last you about 25 years if you practice good oral hygiene and take care of it properly.

tooth implant on nhs?

Question by Lilac_Star: tooth implant on nhs?
my mum is 56, yesterday the tooth next to her front tooth fell out and shes really upset about it. she has a hospital apoinment in 2 weeks but im just trying to find out what can be done for her.
we are with the nhs so will they give her a fake tooth? or just tell her to get on with it??:( she wouldnt be able to wear dentures as she would find them too uncomfortable, also its a bit silly wearing dentures for one missing tooth

Best answer:

Answer by sarah_wltr
sorry, i had the same problem and the only thing available on the nhs is a denture plate, which isnt pleasant but the only option. ‘screw’ in teeth cost an awful lot of money (thousands) which i personally cannot afford. i am mortified to be 38 which a denture plate but im getting used to it i suppose. it is very upsetting, my full sympathies are with your mum.

Implanon Implant after misscarriage?

Question by K K: Implanon Implant after misscarriage?
I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage on April 28th. I was 18 weeks gone so had 2 D+C’s. My first menstrual period came on June 1st and lasted 6 days. I was told my the obstetrician and gynaecologist that i could not start back on any type of hormonal birth control until after my 1st period. I have made an appointment to see my doc on monday to get the implanon implant fitted. Just wondering what some people thought of this and whether they had any side effects? I had the mirena coil for 2 years, on which i bled continuously so i am hoping that this option will suit me better, I have been told that it can cause a lot of spotting within the first few months but that things should then settle down. Would you recommend it?
if not what would you suggest?

me and my bestmate both got the implanon on the same day after a couple of friends had it and recommended it…

well i recently got the implanon taken out in may after just a year.

i only had 2 periods while i had it in. one in august that lasted nearly 2 weeks and it was so painful that i had to take 3 days off work. the second one was in november and also lasted 2 weeks.

i also put on 3stone in weight within a year. i was always hungry. and i tried several different diets and increased my exersize everyday and the weight still didnt budge… it made me very upset as ive never been so big.

so from that i wouldnt recommend it. since its been taken out ive lost 8lbs really easily….

my bestfriend had constant periods for the first 6 months so she got it removed b4 me.
she also thinks she got slightly depressed from it.

but other friends who have had it havent had any problems so it does work for some people

Taking long-acting GnRH agonists (Zoladex, Lupron) for a long period of time has been associated with something called ‘metabolic syndrome.’ This is a complex disorder of diabetes, cholesterol abnormalities, and metabolic disorders that can wreak havoc.

any dentists out there? implant and bridge query?

Question by Cathy M: any dentists out there? implant and bridge query?
i am missing quite a lot of my back teeth and going to see my dentist about having implants and bridges but just curious to see if this is possible before i go.

im looking to either crown or vaner my top left canine tooth, the gap between my canine and 2nd premolar im looking to have a bridge put in onlhy thing is my 2nd premolar has a large amalagm filling so not sure if possible?

my top right of my mouth i have my 1st premolar and upwards missing. i was looking to have dental implants put in but to reduce the cost i was thinking would it be possible to have implanted the 2nd premolar and the 2nd molar and then have a bridge put in to sort the gaps of the 1st premolar and the 1st molar?

just wondering if this would be at all possible?

the problem with implants in the maxilla is the lack of bone and the amount you have depends on how long ago you lost these teeth, also if you have lost this amount of teeth then
it may be due to periodontal problems ( poor gums and bone loss ), so your remaining teeth may not be in great shape to hold bridges, a much cheaper alternative may be a chrome upper denture, but of course yoy need to get all the facts from your dentist, but be aware implants are not always the answer
