Question by Crow: How do you know if your dentist is spoofing? Read on if you have a good stomach and patience.?
I acknowledge to start that I may well be a bit paranoid here….
The story goes: Dental Visit November Tooth Ache (throbbing type) on bottom at site of 10 year old bridge. I had been to him for check up a year before and he had taken rays and said all was ok and now said this was just inflammation from ‘grinding’. He gave me a course of antibiotics (2)but strongly suggested that I come back and be fitted for a mouth guard-cost 200eur. I said thank you I will wait. Took the antibiotics and it cleared up.
Pain returns with a vengeance early Feb. Jaw swollen now. Return to him he looks at tooth. Takes xray and says now that the tooth is badly decayed and he can try root canal on it but at my own risk as it may not work and if not I am looking at implants which will cost thousands… Another course of antibiotics (2) and am called back for a temporary filling a week later. (I sign a disclaimer to say this may not work etc).
The week before I am due to return for the final filling it starts to pain again. Ask for emergency appointment as I reckon this is not normal. I have never had that sort of pain with temp filling before. Earliest appointment given . He was quite rude ‘What are you doing here, I only have 15 minutes, We don’t do miracles here…’ Another script given to me (no exam) and I return today for filling. My choice not to take the pills.
Awful experience. I will forgive him that as it was tricky However, it all became a bit dramatic mid poking and prodding and putting some stuff into the root having removed the nerve, rubber dam thing on and this DISGUSTING BURNING chemical is going down my throat Dam was not secure… Coughing, eyes watering, PANIC, I am going to choke and he is in a hurry.
To make a long story short…… He is happy now that he has the filling done and sealed (He says now he knows that the reason for the pain was food caught underneath bridge which won’t happen again IF I now come back in a month for some special sealing treatment which will cost 200 extra. To date it has cost me 350 euro (not including antibiotics). Now if it works it will still be a lot cheaper than implants but one wonders what is going on when you are in that chair. He could tell me ANYTHING… What would you do? (He was nice at the finale…)
I forgot to add that he also said today that he may bring me back to have some of the gum surgically removed as it it not possible to get under the crown to clean it because of it…
No more talk of the mouth guard either?

Too many antibiotics given which would not solve your problem.
A root canal should have been done right away.
Don’t know where you should go from here without seeing your mouth and the x-rays.
See another dentist for a second opinion.
