How long to add an extra tooth to a partial denture?

Question by Lamalamadingdong: How long to add an extra tooth to a partial denture?
Hi there. I have a partial upper and work/live in London, away from my actual home, so I don’t get to see my old dentist very often at all. For the past few months I’ve had a recurring toothache, caused by a cracked tooth.

My “real” dentist gave me root canal treatment in April, but warned that it might not work and that extraction could be necessary. Since then things have got worse and I am considering seeing a dentist local to my work about the tooth.

However, it is one which has a clasp attached and if it were to be extracted, it would also leave a very unsightly hole until a new tooth & clasp are added. I wouldn’t want my colleagues to see it.

So my question is: is it possible to have something like this done in one day? Less would be even better (LOL)! How much migth it cost? And is there anywhere in London that someone here might recommend?

Many thanks…

I don’t think it possible to have it done in one day as few dentists have technicians on site. Is there room on your present denture to fit a new tooth. The best alternative (and of course it will cost) is to have a new denture which includes your new tooth. This can be prepared before you have your tooth out then fitted on the day.
Good Luck

My dentist had a small upper denture made for me,costing nearly £600?

Question by ameryharrison: My dentist had a small upper denture made for me,costing nearly £600?
as I have several of my own teeth it is supposed to clamp with a wire on each side. After a few days wearing it,I found one of these clips was rubbing on my cheek, and making it sore.I decided this clip would have to be removed (I use fixadent to hold it secure, anyway) the dentist didnt want to know, and told me to get used to it,which of course was impossible. I decided that kill or cure was the only way,so I snipped this wire off myself. This has cured the problem, but I could not avoid breaking a little of the plastic, which feels rough to the tongue, and is probably going to itself rub on something. The purpose of this is to ask if anyone knows of anything I can use to put on the rough part? I have looked in Boots but they dont have anything. It would have to dry smooth and hard, and not be affected by moisture. Also should not be poisoneous.I dont hold out much hope,is there any dental people out there? Thanks

I would go back to the dentist and tell him the wire “broke” and ask him to re-do the work. Who cares if he thinks you are lying?
Am presuming you are UK therefore using another dentist out of the question?

Is there any alternative to a denture with a plate for missing front tooth?

Question by Alocinturner: Is there any alternative to a denture with a plate for missing front tooth?
About 4 years ago, my partner lost half of his front tooth after getting in the way of a paperweight that had been launched across a room at somebody else.

He saw a dentist who performed a root canal treatment and the dentist left the partial tooth where it was as he believed he could have a crown post fitted to replace the tooth.

After 4 years of me bugging him, he finally went to see the dentist to arrange the replacement tooth and he was advised that they can’t do a crown post and that a denture would be his only option.

The problem is, my partner doesn’t like wearing anything in his mouth as it makes him heave – he plays rugby and can’t even manage a gum shield.

Are there any alternatives to having a denture with a plate?

We can’t really afford implants, although we haven’t ruled this option out yet.

Thanks

I’d suggest you see another dentist before deciding. Just because one dentist said he couldn’t do it doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

Can I get an emergency denture made?

Question by lovely: Can I get an emergency denture made?
I wear a denture and my butcher of a dentist said I needed two teeth out and he would make a new one, reassuring me that it will have healed by the time I go on holiday. This was a week ago and since then I have had an infection which he is treating with antibiotics. However my gums are so swollen I dont think my old denture will now fit and I`m due to go on holiday in a week. Is there anything I can do to get an emergency one fitted in this time? Im not due to get fitted for one until three weeks time. I cant eat and I dont fancy going on holiday with no teeth!
Please help!!!

Go to another Dentist, and stop going to this Man because he sounds just awful. I was in that position many years ago and the whole business left me in tears. But then I found the one I have he got working on me from the time I got in touch with him.He treated me so nicely and put me at ease from Day one.He made a marvellous difference to me and my teeth, and in the years that have followed he has never let me down. There is quite a lot to choose from these days, so you do not have to go to a man who is ignorant, and who treats you like a nobody. You are a Patient and you are helping to put money in his pocket, so there is not the slightest inconvenience to you to change it all. Go to it…. !!

New partial denture question?

Question by zakiit: New partial denture question?
This afternoon I got a new partial upper denture and being the first time I have had one, I have some questions. I tried asking the dentist who is very uncommuncative and generally not a nice person so will be looking for a new dentist in due course.

My question is, is there a best way to remove them for cleaning?

Also will I lose the hiss that I have suddenly developed?

And are there any tips anyone has on how to learn to eat and speak again? They are quite comfortable, but of course I am aware of them and am worried that they might drop down which would be embarrassing.

The leaflet I was given just mentioned soaking them with a denture tablet for 20 minutes, but would it be okay for them to be soaked overnight?

Sorry for all the questions, but if the dentist will not answer I have to ask somewhere! Thanks in anticipation. She is very unsympathetic even though I lost several teeth due to having stomach problems which caused frequent vomiting and the acid eroded them. Thankfully that is sorted now.
Kernow Lady – I nearly lost the plate laughing at the vision evoked by your husband fixing your teeth in the shed!! Haven’t laughed so much in ages! Have managed to keep them in until 11pm, they’re now in their bath with a fizzy tablet and warm water!

you can soak them for as long as you like or clean them with dentucream which takes few min. at first i would not take them out for long periods until you are used to them. Suck lots of boiled sweets this helps to settle them in ,i keep mine in to sleep

Immediate partial denture ?

Question by Lil old me: Immediate partial denture ?
I have recently had a tooth pulled out on my top row of teeth making a total of 2 missing teeth. One was taken out about 3 years ago but the more recent one was just a few days ago. As a result I have had a partial denture fitted with the 2 teeth on. My problem is that I absolutely hate it!! I cant speak properly, find it very difficult to eat without the denture not wobbling and coming out of place and at times it makes me gag just because the feeling it gives me in my mouth. My question is, will I ever get over these things?! I really hope so as the 2 missing teeth are visable from the front!
Thank you so far for the great answers, in response to some of the points you have raised..

I will eventually get a bridge (hopefully if funds stretch) but my dentist told me that my gums need to heal for at least 5 months first.

My denture doesnt have any clips, its just a plastic roof with 2 teeth somehow stuck on – it just fits in where there are gaps and is expected to stay (most of the time it does, its just eating!).

Hmmm, I think I might make a trip back to the dentist perhaps to see whether they are loose. If didnt think of that.

Should upper denture roof plate be flush with the roof of my mouth?

Question by Windmaker: Should upper denture roof plate be flush with the roof of my mouth?
I just today received a partial upper denture….a first for me (four successive teeth on one side, and three intermittent teeth on the other side). While it seems snug so far, my concern is about the fact that the metal plate that is in the roof of my mouth is not making contact with the flesh. I immediately mentioned this to the dentist, but he didn’t seem to be giving me a straight answer about this matter. This “roof” section of the denture covers approximately a third of the roof (when you consider that the back edge has somewhat of a horse shoe shape with the outside portions go farther back than the center portion), and no matter how hard I bite down, most of the plate does not touch, or is not flush, with the roof of my mouth. It feels like I could easily insert a paper clip underneath it, and I’ve already learned that it traps food each time I eat. I can certainly feel (with my tongue) the entire (somewhat sharp) back edge of this plate is protruding from one side of my mouth to the other.

Is there someone with denture knowledge who could comment on whether this protrusion of the roof plate away from the roof of my mouth is a proper fit?….or are they customarily designed to be flush against the roof?. The imprint on the metal certainly appears to be that of the surface of my roof when the mold was taken, so I find it hard to believe it’s supposed to be suspended as far as it is away from being flush and in contact with the roof of my mouth.

I would appreciate hearing any comments from those of you who feel qualified and informed about this matter (before I return to the dentist for another adjustment…he said probably in a week or so it’ll need some tightening again), Thus far I have not been successful in locating any information about this specific issue on the Internet…but I will keep trying.

Yes, the metal palate portion of your partial should be in contact with the soft tissue of your palate. There is even a little bead line or ridge scribed on the model before casting to ensure this seals off to prevent a food trap. If you will look at the inside of your metal partial you will see the slight raised bead running the entire length of the edge. This raised edge should be in intimate contact with soft tissue.

This is caused by a distorted impression or a distorted casting. The only proper solution is to reimpress and recast. If you will go back the dentist and tell them you gave it a week or so to see if the soft tissue would seal off with the edge of the partial and it still has not. Tell them you are having to clean trapped food from underneath and they will know what the problem is. How they want to handle the problem will be telling. If they want to place a “reline” material inside the partial to fill in the space you will have continued maintenance on that area for the life of the partial due to leakage at the edges and delamination of the material over timel. Make them promise in writing they will correct any future leakage or other problems at no charge for the life of the partial. A new impression and casting is the correct way to approach this problem.
