Is the tooth nerve removed during a dental implant?

Question by LoveSydney: Is the tooth nerve removed during a dental implant?
I had a metal pin put in back in 2002 and a crown added. Recently I went to get a new crown but it wasnt as good and I complained that it seemed to stick out. {not flush with the other teeth} The dentist said he could shave the pin but this could be problematic. Anyway he did so and we got the new crown sorted. Its been a couple of months now but I still feel a kind of ache there. Its not painful its more like a hot feeling ache.
What could this be? I thought there was no nerve for implants. I have noticed I have got quite dark gums i dont know if that is a sympton.
Why would I have this sensation around my dental implant? Its getting hard for me to forget my crown.
The bite is fine.
Would the pin be stuck in an existing tooth with a nerve or is this not done because I think his concern when grinding was touching a nerve. If so would it be more than just this hot sensation aching i would feel if it was a nerve problem. Would I be in pain,

the idea of an implant is to replace missing teeth, so yes the nerve is removed as it is in the root of the tooth. The new crown may be too high in your bite so your dentist should check this with something called articulating paper, this is a very thin piece of carbon paper which is placed between your teeth and then you are asked to bite gently down on it, it will mark any high spots on the crown. As to the ache this can be a result of you biting too heavily on the crown so the best thing you can do is go back to your dentist to get it checked out.

How do I go about getting 1 dental implant done on the NHS?

Question by Clare: How do I go about getting 1 dental implant done on the NHS?
I was told by my private dentist that I may be able to get 1 dental implant done on the NHS. Im 20 years old and have lost a front tooth. I wear a partial denture which keeps breaking, when i say keeps breaking I mean all the time.

I don’t wear it at home or when I eat, only when I go out. It was repaired last tuesday, I picked it up from the dentist, wore it wednesday and 2 hours at college, wore it for about 5 hours thursday, didn’t touch it at all friday, wore it 2 hour saturday, went to take it out to eat something and it snapped again.

Its really starting to affect my life, I wont go to college without it, I wont meet up with friends, ive cancelled plans this week purely because I have no tooth. I know it seems stupid but im very very self conscious. I was always bullied at school and now have no confidence at all (yeah there’s the sob story lol)

Does this seem a reasonable case just to get 1 implant done? If I do it through my dentist it will cost £2000, just for the one!

I don’t know where to start about contacting the NHS.

i wonder if there would be any information on the NHS Direct website…there certainly is a phone number where you could possibly ring for advice. http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

i got my dental implant done in India…it cost me £470 & is perfect…like you say – UK dentists charge £2000 – i doubt you can get one on the NHS – but it is sure worth a try. good luck.

Pretty sure your fitted with temporary crowns or bridges until the final procedure.

That’s what happened with me when I got my crown. I had a temporary one slapped in until the fitted one was made.

Dental Bridge, whats involved? and would it work for me??……?

Question by Jj J: Dental Bridge, whats involved? and would it work for me??……?
I have a phobia of the dentist, so going there is very traumatic for me. Ive always got sedated in the past.

I have a canine tooth which has no teeth either side of it, i have a partial denture that the NHS made up 5 years ago which is poor in colour, poor in quality and poor fitment.

Im thinking to go private and ask them to try give me some sort of dental bridge, Before i start sheading alot of money… Does anyone know if they would or what type of bridge and whats involved that they would use? as i said my canine tooth will be the support and i want the fill the gap either side. The canine appears to be healthy. Answers greatly appriciated

this is really a question you need to ask the dentist as only professional appraisal and answer will be any real use. as I understating it, a bridge needs to be from supporting tooth or teeth and using just one to offer support to another two will probably put too much strain on the canine with eventual failure. a bridge After all means ‘from one side to another’ eg two supports at least over a crossing. ( gap)
The fear is very understandable and I used to suffer that too . ( still hate dentists ) any decent dentist will be able to inform you what exactly is involved. the possible outcome and any risks involved. it isn’t cheap but I had one for many years until the supporting tooth /gum erosion reached a point where i had to lose both tooth and bridge.

Dental advice needed! Just had three teeth extracted and…..?

Question by Sarah: Dental advice needed! Just had three teeth extracted and…..?
stitches were needed. This was done by my (new and rather young!) dentist in his surgery. No knock out, just local anaesthetic. Three injections to the roof of my mouth and I lost count at three in my gum line! I have had a fair bit of dental work done and my share of teeth being extracted but when I agreed to this course of treatment I was assured that all would be well in time for my holiday next week. I have a mouth full of blood and will, no doubt, scare my son and his mates when I collect him from school. I look like the bride of frankenstein, or someone equally bloody! What can I do apart from salt water mouth wash to speed up the healing process so I am not a toothless wonder in 10 days? Call me Gummy, go on, I can larf at myself! The crazy bit is,he gave me my new denture to bring home for my back teeth and I am totally bemused as to where and how it fits. I know where I wanna stick the darned thing!! And I was expecting some antibiotics and/or painkillers…maybe mouthwash…nope, just start the salt mouthwash from tomorrow…so I gotta scare the local kids till then cos I cannot stop the blood coming outta the side of my mouth. You made and enemy today,Mr, Dentist!!!! I am in the U.K, btw. Cheers and Have Fun…I struggle to say Keep Smiling…but I will…so Keep Smiling ;0)
these teeth were VERY stubborn…came out in bits and still are…bits falling from my gumline…took him an hour (just short of) to do this…never has having teeth removed been so…YUCKY!!…and I have had my fair share of extractions ;0)

What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?

Question by Dawn: What are some dental mistakes you have encountered with dental work?
I’ve had a drill broken off in a tooth while undergoing a root canal. The dentist left it in there and sealed it up. The tooth later abscessed during my vacation.

Another dentist ordered a crown which was defective. He put it on my tooth anyway and charged me full price for it. It never stayed on and the tooth eventually had to be pulled because I couldn’t afford ANOTHER crown.

I also received a defective bottom denture which the dentist refused to correct… because he was giving me “such a good deal”. The denture eventually warped my lower jaw.

Do you have any horror stories? Or am I the only one?

Sometimes I wonder if dentists have any integrity.
Oh, I’ve changed dentists often but they all seem to make mistakes… at least the ones I’ve seen.

They took out the wrong teeth. I was getting braces and needed to have 4 permanent teeth taken out. They took 4 other teeth. After realizing their mistake, they took the 4 teeth they were supposed to take out.

I’m now missing 8 permanent teeth, and I brush daily. Damn dentists…

Friend Needs Urgent Dental Advice. What Can I Say?

Question by emeraldisle2222: Friend Needs Urgent Dental Advice. What Can I Say?
My friend lost his top teeth earlier in the year due to an accident.
The dentist is nearly four months trying to correctly fit a denture for him, but it is just not working.
I am worried for my friend as I see him becoming more and more depressed, and socially withdrawn.
Sometimes the denture becomes loose, and sometimes it makes strange sounds while he is talking.
What is the best advice that I can give him?
I just don’t know what to say, but I do worry for him.
The dental lab just does not seem able to get it right.
The dentist took another impression two weeks ago, but it is exactly the same.
Would appreciate your comments.

Where can I get inexpensive dental insurance?

Question by SHERRY: Where can I get inexpensive dental insurance?
I have Medicare/Medicaid here in Nevada, cause I’ve been laid off of work for 2 years now…but because I’m over 21 yrs.old, Medicaid will only cover dental work such as dentures and x-rays…but I have a broken cavity that needs 2 be repaired, cause over the years it’s been cracked and has fallen out completely. Now I’m in severe pain, I can’t hardly eat or drink anything, and I need HELP ASAP!!! I don’t know much about insurances, so if anyone can please give me some advise or a # to call 4 affordable dental insurance, I’d really appreciate it. I basically just need some fillings done.

It’s a long shot, but try calling your closest university.

A small community college near my town offers free cleanings and $ 20 whitenings. No telling what some of the bigger universities need.

I know that a lot of dentists would be willing to work with you concerning your bill. Try calling around, and get different bids. In any case, you’re going to have to set some money aside.

NHS dental…?

Question by flyzonked: NHS dental…?
Pretty soon I’m going to have seven teeth removed. Somebody told me that you can get ‘bridges’, which are dentures that click into your gums (I think that’s how he explained it, I’ve never heard of these before)?

I get free dental treatment on the NHS because I’m a single mother on income support, my question is, can I get these on the NHS, or will I have to pay?

Best answer:

Answer by Apple Crumble
No you will not have to pay.
The dentist will take care of you as they did for me.
