You need your teeth fixed.
The Dentist needs £1500, and you don’t have the money.
Ask him about a payment plan, you may be able to pay him back at about £100 a month.

Is it possible to repair the cosmetic damage sustained from a zygomatic / blow out fracture?

Question by CHACC: Is it possible to repair the cosmetic damage sustained from a zygomatic / blow out fracture?
Sustained a blow out fracture several years ago and Ive never been happy with the fact I’ve now got one eye smaller than the other…looks unsymmetrical and gives me a bit of an evil look lol. At the time the specialist said there’s nothing they can do to improve it cosmetically because it isn’t ‘bad enough’…

However it’s bad enough that I notice it, and see it in pictures…does anybody out there know if it’s possible to get some kind of resconstructive surgery? I’m seeing the doctor this wk but any advice on what to ask would be appreciated….

It seems strange when someone like me has been left a bit disfigured from an accident that they can’t repair the damage…when you get celebs like Jordan having loads of random surgery to make them look good???

Hi

I feel for you, I really do and agree with your Jordan comparison – unfortunately that’s the power of money for you!

OK – your cosmetic problem. The thing that the specialist hit on was that the damage wasn’t bad enough for reconstruction. Medical science is a wonderful thing and what they can do these days with plastic surgery is incredible. But – 99% of reconstructive or corrective surgeries are working from the initial state of “it’s broken – let’s fix it”. Add to that the fact that the eye and the whole bony structure around it is incredibly delicate and finely balanced, most reconstructive surgery to that area is a do or die thing, ie if it goes well, the patient regains their sight – if it goes badly then they were going to loose their sight anyway if they didn’t operate. I suspect that they were concerned that if they went in and did anything, you could potentially loose the eye or even make matters worse.

That said, they are forever making advances in medical treatments. It’s certainly worthwhile going back to your GP and as a patient, you can now have quite a large say in your treatment. I’m no expert on this side of the new NHS way of referring to this that or the other hospital, but my wife who knows a HELL of a lot more than me tells me that you could ask for a referral to Morfields Eye Hospital in London. Now, I don’t know where in the country you are, but if I had an eye problem and were willing to get expert opinion and treatment – I’d be asking to be referred there.

Another course of action for you might be to ask the Doctor for a referral to a counselling service. This may sound like a cop-out, but bear with me. If the difference in size is causing you distress, you might be able to access services designed to help you “mask” the problem (the same sort of services that produce “fake” breasts for mastectomy patients or glass eyes, etc – you get the idea). They may only be able to suggest wearing a pair or darkened glasses, but surely a discussion would be at least worthwhile in case they suggest something you hadn’t thought of.

Good luck my friend – I wish you well.

Post Preputioplasty Cosmetic?

Question by Clive: Post Preputioplasty Cosmetic?
I’m 16 diabetic and the day before yesterday had preputioplasty to overcome phimosis. At the hospital i was so happy to just be able to retract the foreskin i totally ignored the look of it. However, now i seem quite shocked of how unsightly it is and to be honest i think its unacceptable. I just want it to be ”normal” and ”healthy” as quickly as possible.
What should i do?

Its the distortion which seems to be worrying me. I keep thinking: Will it change once the swelling has gone? Will it need extra correction surgery after the healing process? How long would that take?
.. Could anyone answer these from personal experience?

Your body just went to surgery… be positive and let it heal… it will look normal

Cosmetic bridge/denture work on NHS/Private?

Question by Joe Smith: Cosmetic bridge/denture work on NHS/Private?
I wish to get two teeth removed (either side of two top front teeth) and replaced with either bridges or dentures (to be frank; whichever’s cheapest) and avoid braces, for both cosmetic and cost reasons. I understand this would be considered cosmetic work under the NHS so would cost more but I don’t know how much specifically. Can anyone give estimations and details for this procedure, or if there are any alternatives?

Thanks
Also, will a dentist definitely remove teeth to put in a partial denture?

Best answer:

Answer by Toothbob
The answer to this depends on the condition of your teeth, how old you are, how crooked your teeth are. No conscientious dentist would take out healthy teeth of a youngster, then carve up more good ones to make bridgework. Nor would one want to put someone in a denture when it can be avoided.

I suggest you talk this through with your dentist to find out what the alternatives are. Either way, if you talking about removing healthy teeth, this would not be covered in any way by the NHS. To do this privately would cost about the same as a course of ortho.

How can I know the top cosmetic dental surgeries in my area?

Question by snakeandmonkey: How can I know the top cosmetic dental surgeries in my area?
I want to put a porcelain bridge on my upper front teeth iin Cambridge. However, I do not know how could I find out which dental surgery will do a proper job. I want my bridge to look just like my own teeth or almost like that. Just like celebrities have. I have seen people with bridges and some of their bridges look like horse’s teeth. They look somehow bulky.
Also, what would be the best type of the porcelain bridge? I have seen some on the websites which have some mettal on the inner side of the bridge and I do not like it at all as it looks cheap.
Many thanks!

Look in the yellow pages of a phone book and look for ones that advertise “cosmetic dentistry”. Not all dentists do this so you want to pick one that does. All of your concerns should be addressed with your dentist.

How do I see a dermatologist (U.K.) regarding cosmetic concerns?

Question by Amor Fati: How do I see a dermatologist (U.K.) regarding cosmetic concerns?
I’d like to see a dermatologist to ask his or her opinion on cosmetic procedures like the ones offered by laser clinics etc, so how do I do this?
I’ve heard that you need to go through your GP first, but can I ask my GP to refer me to a dermatologist for cosmetic reasons, rather than medical?

I also don’t know whether to tell them about my mental health, as I suffer from depression and social anxiety, and I have heard that cosmetic practitioners do not like operating on people with ‘unstable mental health’, for obvious reasons, though I myself am quite realistic on the limitations of cosmetic procedures.
However, because I have very little money and want the procedure done as soon as possible – I go to uni in October – would it be better to tell my GP the reason I want the procedure? I have heard that – on an unrelated field – that mole removal can be done cosmetically at no cost on the NHS if the patient is self-conscious about it and the scarring that could be left by a basic excision (how it is done on the NHS…). Would this be similar for cosmetic laser surgery do you think?

Any advice greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.
To Hannah:

I’m not looking for mole removal, it was just an example of the difference between ‘medical’ ie: necessary for your physical health, and ‘cosmetic’ ie: preferable for your image/self-esteem.

Basically I have serious dark circles beneath my eyes and horrible skin in general really. I know that dark circles are difficult to treat and probably impossible to remove completely, so I am looking for treatments that can improve them and the surrounding skin too. And yes, it is severely affecting my confidence and social life.

Do you know how long it would take to see a dermatologist after referral, and how long to get treatment after seeing the dermatologist? I go to uni in October so I am quite desperate to a) have the treatment before then, and b) be at least significantly healed, if not completely.

oh and ‘laser treatment’ means like the one offered here: http://www.nottinghamlaserclinic.com/lasersurgery.htm

thanks for your help!

I am not asking if you think a tummy tuck is the way forward, I am asking for details about how to get one done cheaply, but safely. please do not answer unless you have information. thank you. Also, who cares about my spelling? it’s not exactly important is it?
